To the FutureDunlap track competed well at both meets, but there is a lot of room to improve. Next week we will be racing our last indoor race other than indoor state, which you have to qualify for. Our last meet will be at Monmouth College, and it will be the last chance for our runners to qualify for indoor state. To qualify you must be one of the top 15 competitors in your event according to this seasons personal records.
IntroAs I said in my last post our first indoor meet will be in Galesburg at Knox College. This meet is always fun because it is co-ed and both of our teams go. There are downsides though, the meet starts at 4:00 PM and we usually don't get home until 11:30 PM. Also, at all indoor meets not just Knox College the air is filled with dust and dirt from the long-jump sandpit. With just one week until we have this meet our team has a lot of work to do. Training the Week of the MeetUsually training the week of the first indoor meet is pretty standard compared to a normal week of training. Monday- On a Monday the distance group would have a 40 minute long run with some strides. Tuesday- On a Tuesday we would have a speed workout on the track. A speed workout would be a range of 200m-400m repeats at mile pace. Wednesday- On a Wednesday we would be in the weight room lifting. Thursday- On a Thursday we would be doing an easy run of about 20 minutes and some strides afterwards to prepare for the meet the next day. Friday- Meet Day! Things to do Before the MeetBefore the meet starts there are many very important things we need to do. First, everyone needs to be issued a uniform. Another important part of the team is a captain, and our coach has decided that the team will decide who the captains are. So, we had a vote but he still has not told us the results or how many captains there will be. Lastly, our team needs a lot more practices that we do not have time for, and I believe our team is going into this meet unprepared. Last Years ResultsI Last year at the Knox College meet our team did well. Though it is not scored, which means there is no team winner, individually most of the athletes on our team performed well. I can not pull up the results because they are locked right now, and I do not remember what happened in every event, but I can tell you the results of the races that I ran. My first race was a relay, the 4x800m, my team finished 2nd in a time of 8:27. My split was 2:07. My second and last event that I ran was the mile and I finished 4th in a time of 4:48.
I apologize for this being a boring blog post with no pictures due to me running out of pictures to post. I will have more after our meet next week. Week 1During the first week of track we only have practice 3 days of the week. Coach does this to ease everyone back into the routine of coming to practice and working out everyday. Though everyone should be in shape, and should have been running all winter to prepare for the season, not everyone does. Day 1This year our first track practice consisted of meeting each member on the team and learning the daily routine for warm-ups. After that, the athletes split up into three different groups of throwers, sprinters, and distance runners. I personally am a distance runner so I will mainly be talking about the distance aspect of track. On our first day the distance group went for a 30 minute run. East Peoria Invitational- Cross Country Day 2On the second day after our daily warm-ups the distance team went to the weight room. This was a surprise to me because this is the first time our distance team had stepped foot in the weight room, and it was my 4th year of track. Coach said we were going to be in the weight room at least once a week all throughout the season. After finishing lifting in the weight room we were to do a 15 minute run, which was about 2 miles. Indoor State- Track Day 3To finish the week we did another 30 minute run and finished with strides. Strides are a 100 meter sprint where we work on our form and speed. Upcoming MeetOur first indoor meet is February 22nd, which is 29 days away. The meet is hosted by Galesburg and it is at Knox College. Usually only varsity members race during the indoor season, which includes mostly juniors and senior. Some freshman and sophomores race as well if they excel at practice during workouts.
In a typical week of training in the off-season before track you want to be running at least five days a week and those days you are not running you want to be cross training. I usually run 6 days a week sometimes 7. In the off-season you want to be doing a lot of miles to build a strong base so you are ready for workouts when track season comes around. MondaySome people don't consider Monday the beginning of the week, but when you are training for cross country or track it is. On Monday's you want to get your most mileage in and you call this your long run where you gain a lot of mental strength and endurance. My regular long run for track is about 8 miles. TuesdayOn Tuesday's I like to get an easy run in after my long run. This should be anywhere form 4 to 6 miles and the pace should be slower than your long run. There shouldn't be really any strain on your body. Last year conference 2 mile. WednesdayOn Wednesday's I do a workout of some sort every other week. When I am not doing a workout I usually do 6 or 7 miles. If I am doing a Workout it is usually a stamina run which is an upbeat pace for about 4 to 5 miles. Stamina runs help with strength, endurance, and mental strength. ThursdayOn Thursday's I recover from my workout with an easy day. The mileage on Thursday is pretty consistent whether I did a workout on Wednesday or not. It is usually 5 or 6 miles. The pace for that mileage should be the same as Tuesday. FridayOn Friday's I just run 7 miles at regular pace. In the evening I do a hip and lower-back strengthening workout. Last year Bloomington Relay's DMR. SaturdayOn Saturday's I run a short 4 miles at regular pace. I also do core, push-ups, and pull-ups. To start off the core I do a 4 minute circuit where I do a core exercise for a minute and switch to a different one every minute with no breaks in between each. The last part of core that I do is a 4 minute plank where is start on my front for a minute, then switch to my side for a minute, then the other side for a minute, and finish with another minute on the front. I usually do 100 push-ups in sets of 20 and 30 pull-ups in sets of 5 or 10. SundayOn Sunday's if I run I do 2 to 4 miles, but if I am not running I swim. When I swim I usually do intervals of 100 meters 10 to 12 times. Swimming helps with strengthening your whole body and recovery.
RegionalsFollowing the conference meet, the post season begins with the regional meet. The top six teams from each regional advance to the sectional, there are seven teams in each sectional. The eagles competed at Lake Storey park in Galesburg. The boys finished fifth as a team following the lead of Dane Tow, who finished sixth in a time of 17:41. The boys one-to-five split was one minute and thirty-eight seconds. The boys would have competed better if I was not missing due the a stress reaction I acquired the week before. I will not be competing the rest of the season due to this injury. Max Varness, who was second at the boys regional. The girls finished third as a team following the lead of Abby Johnson, who finished ninth in a time of 20:32. Their one-to-five split was one minute and fifty seconds. The girls would have won the meet, but they did not race their top three girls because they wanted to save their legs for next weeks sectional race. SectionalsThe next week, both teams competed at the sectionals and the top five teams from each sectional advance to state, there are seventeen teams at each sectional. The boys finished eleventh following the lead of Max Varness, who finished in a time of 16:40. The boys one-to-five split was fifty-three seconds. The boys did not advance to state meaning the sectional meet was the end of their season. Max Varness leading the boys at sectionals The girls tied for fifth as a team following the lead of Macy Priess, who finished ninth in a time of 18:40. The girls one-to-five split was one minute and eight seconds. The girls barely made it to state by tying with metamora, but advanced and will compete the next week at state. StateThe girls competed well at state finishing eighteenth, following the lead of Macy Priess, who finished twenty-fourth in a time of 17:57. The top twenty-five runners are considered all-state runners which means Macy received that honor which is very impressive considering she is a sophomore. The girls one-to-five split was one minute and forty-four seconds. That was the last race of the girls cross country season. TrackThe rest of the posts for this blog will be about track considering cross country season is over. Now, track meets do not start until February, so I will be posting about the off-season training I go through.
East Peoria InvitationalFollowing the Dunlap Invitational the eagles competed at the East Peoria Invitational in East Peoria. The boys finished tenth as a team following the lead of me, who finished thirty-ninth in a time of 16:59. The boys one-to-five split was twenty seconds. The boys did fairly well considering they were missing their number two runner, Max Varness. The boys at the start line, Just as the race is about to begin. Palatine InvitationalThe same week the girls traveled to Palatine to compete at the Palatine Invitational. The girls placed fifteenth following the lead of Macy Priess, who finished nineteenth in a time of 18:09. The girls one-to-five split was one minute and forty-nine seconds. The girls competed well, the Palatine Invitational is very competitive. Running Red InvitationalThe next week, Eagles Cross Country competed at the Running Red Invitational in Metamora. The boys finished eleventh following the lead of Max Varness, who finished thirty-sixth in a time of 16:41. The boys one-to-five split was fifty seconds. The boys competed well considering I, one of the top runners was missing due to an injury. Lincoln Metzger slipped and fell three times during his race due to the muddy course and stormy weather. The girls finished eighth as a team without their lead runner Macy Priess, who was missing due to an injury. They were also missing Sierra Cenek another top runner, who plays a big roll in scoring for their team. Abby Banister lead the girls finishing eighteenth in a time of 18:46. The girls one-to-five split was two minutes and thirty-six seconds. ConferenceIn the final week of the regular season Eagles Cross Country competed at the Mid- Illini Conference meet in Peoria. The boys finished fifth following the lead of Max Varness, who placed seventeenth in a time of 16:32. Their one-to-five split was fifty-six seconds. I was injured for this meet as well. Eli Blascyk finishing the race followed by JT. The girls won the meet following the lead of Macy Priess, who finished fifth in a time of 18:18. Their one-to-five split was one minute and nine seconds. The girls have won the conference meet eight years in a row.
Normal West InvitationalThe 2018 season of Eagles Cross Country began with the Normal West Invitational in Bloomington. The boys competed well considering I, one of the top runners, was not racing due to a broken wrist that I had acquired the previous week while flipping a four-wheeler. As a team the boys placed eighth following the lead of Max Varness, who finished with a time of 17:19 on the three mile course. The boys difference in time from their number one runner to their number five runner was twenty-four seconds. The first five runners to finish are the runners that score for the team. The girls also raced at the Normal West Invitational. The girls were able to finish second as a team behind Minooka. That is very impressive considering they were missing their number one runner Abby Johnson due to an injury she had received. Their lead runner was Macy Priess, who finished fifth in a time of 19:05. The girls difference in from their number one to their number five runner was one minute and forty-one seconds. Silver Streak InvitationalThe following week, Eagles Cross Country competed at the Silver Streak Invitational in Galesburg. The Boys were missing me again, but that did not stop them from competing well as a team. Following the lead of JT Templin, who finished tenth in a time of 18:28, the boys finished third as a team just three points behind Galesburg. The boys one-to-five split was twenty-nine seconds. The runner on the left is Max Varness and that is me next to the tree. This is at Galesburg In spite of missing their lead runner for another week, the girls managed to win the meet as a team. They followed the lead of Macy Priess once again, who finished in a time of 20:55. The girls one-to-five split was two minutes and one second. Dunlap InvitationalThe next week, Eagles Cross Country competed at the Dunlap Invitational in Dunlap. The boys finished third, just three points short of first. This was my first race this season and I lead the team, finishing seventh in a time of 16:40 for the three mile course. Our one-to-five split was forty-one seconds. The boys at the start line, just as the race is about to start. The girls finished first as a team, defeating second place by twenty-two points. Macy Priess lead the girls by winning the race in a time of 18:36. She finished with no one else in sight, the next runner finished eleven seconds after her. The girls one-to-five split was one minute and fifty-one seconds.
About MEMy name is Shivom Paudel and I run a lot. I am currently a senior in High School and I run cross country and track. My life revolves around running. I am starting this blog on running as a way for me to keep track and remember my cross country season. I began running my freshman year of high school, so I am entering my fourth year and seventh season as a runner. I am looking forward to this cross country season as it begins and can not wait to share my experience with you. Why I chose Running?I did not always run, when I was younger from ages fives to fifteen I played basketball and baseball like every other kid. I loved competing in team sports and I hated losing. Though as I grew older I started getting bored with basketball and decided that eighth grade year of school basketball would be my last year. I had to find another sport to compete in because I knew if I continued to only play baseball I would burn out and get bored just as I had with basketball. One day in PE class of eighth grade after running the mile my teacher told me I should try running cross country next fall for the High School team. At first I did not want any part of running. Throughout middle school I thought that nonathletic and uncoordinated kids ran cross country. Weeks went by and the thought of running still had not crossed my mind once. Then my older brother had decided he was going to join cross country next year as a junior and it would be his first season as well. I instantly loved the idea of running cross country as a freshman because my brother had always been better than me at sports and clearly it was due to him having more experience and being older than me. This was finally my chance to prove I was a better athlete than him because it was a new sport and neither of us had any prior experience. To conclude why I chose to run it is truly because I would get to compete with my bother at a level playing field, other than age and I loved to compete. I am thankful for my choice to run because running is a very important part of my life now and I don't know what I would do without it. I loved running so much after my first season of cross country I decided to quit baseball and run track in the spring. Coming Soon... |
